Drum Plugins For Garageband

  The simplest option is probably GarageBand, it has a nice selection of drum kits and allows for easy sequencing.

  If you want something a bit more advanced for acoustic sounding drums driven by an external controller, I would recommend DrumPerfect Pro.

• I've got a midi drum kit hooked up to a now ancient iPad 2. I wanted to keep it simple with midi controlled drums and live guitar into Loopy with Audiobus 2 as a practice rig.

  I've tried a fair few drum apps, but I've settled on DM1 as it seems the most stable and simple in this setup and has a good mix of electronic and acoustic sounds. Only thing I don't get from it is the hi-hat pedal as a trigger, works for open and closed hi-hats separately though. DM1 is still a great app, even if you're not battling obsolescence.

  Sounds wise and as a standalone app I love iMPC Pro (1 & 2), but as soon as I try to get it working with other Apps I fall down a deep hole and the music making generally grinds to a halt. I'd also second the above post that Garageband drums are good and simple to use.

• Ditto on garageband, and there are kits for auria's sampler that I believe use some degree of multisampling (I think based on drumagog samples) I have never used drum perfect pro, so it's not that I'm saying don't use it, i just can't give an informed opinion.

  Alesis had a free drum module meant to be used with edrum kits a few years back, they might be viable, and also drumjam has some good drum Kits in it.

  You have options with greater detail on the computer, so maybe down the road that's where you want to look, something like superior drummer. Also logic, which is what the garageband kits are anyway, but just with more detail and control.

  Yes some of the free kits that come with Auria have multisamples for velocity and round robin. The Acoustic Kit is my favourite, it's part of the free ElektroMorph pack in the Auria store, and it maps to general MIDI.

  Out of curiosity... which kit did you get him?

• I have yet to hook it up, but I plan on trying Soft Drummer with my Octapad setup after I finish moving. The samples sound great on their own. I’d say they are definitely better than the similar samples on the octapad itself.

  Whatever you do, getting the lowest latency will be extremely important!!

  BS16i $8, Audio Evolution Mobile Studio $8, AuriaPro $50 can import SF2's and as mentioned Auria has great samples internally and it's a DAW to make or play full band arrangements.

  Once you get a collection of samples you can import the files into Sampler Apps like AudioLayer for even more control over what sample plays at each volume level or even blend multiple samples into a composite drum or cymbal. Cymbals need to play the whole sample in a 'one shot' to sound like the ear deal and a good sampler will do that. I wonder how the MIDI kit handles the cymbal Note Off events... I want a MIDI kit to make my drum tracks too. It's on my list of hardware to covet.

• I can recommend an old iPhone 4 or iPad 1 plus Alesis io Dock (or even their drum dock!) and Nanostudio 1.
  A while ago, I've done a number of latency measurements and NS1 had the lowest latency of all on these old devices. On iPhone 4 with just an iRig MIDI connected, it was 8ms from MIDI Note to sound output. Not bad for drums I think.

• In that case, I alwsys found the latency with using an outboard sound module to be a total pain in the ass.

• The BeatHawk Acoustic Drums IAP is hard to beat, particularly how the cymbals respond to touch. But for overall versatility go with the free GarageBand. Set up a bunch of instrument loops and kits on different tracks and bash away.

  I’d suggest hunting down a used Yamaha or Roland kit - they’re bullet proof and as long as the pads trigger well, the internal sounds won’t matter. You’d need something like BM3 to handle note off information for choke cymbal events. Apps like GarageBand don’t support this feature this natively.
